Reminder: Second collection Sunday, August 29
for Home Missions!

We participate in a special collection for mission parishes in the United States. This Appeal strengthens the Church at home by supporting Catholic communities in need. This collection assists dioceses serving the pastoral needs of many different ethnic groups which including Ukrainian Catholics. It enables Catholic parishes in poor and remote communities to provide Liturgy, the sacraments, and religious education for their people. The Catholic Home Mission Appeal gives us a chance to respond to God the Father's call to love our neighbor.

Please give generously.

This is what is written on the Home Mission web page:

A conversion is required of the Latin Church, that she may respect and fully appreciate the dignity of Eastern Christians, and accept gratefully the spiritual treasures of which the Eastern Catholic Churches are bearers, to the benefit of the entire catholic Communion, wrote Pope John Paul II in his apostolic letter Orientale Luman (no.21). From earliest times, Christianity was made up of local churches that developed different liturgies and disciplines while maintaining one Catholic faith. Today, there are just over 10 million Eastern Catholics worldwide in different churches in full communion with Rome. Although their ancient traditions are from the East, these churches are fully Catholic. Pope John Paul II has referred to the Latin and Eastern churches as "the two lungs of the Catholic Church."

During the past century, immigrants from Eastern Europe and the Near East brought their vibrant cultures and faith to the United States. They often worked at miners' and laborers' wages to support their parishes and families. That beautiful churches were built on these meager earnings was truly remarkable.

More recently, uprooted immigrants from these same areas arrive to stay in the United States permanently. With often only a high school education or less and substantially lower incomes than their native Catholic counterparts, they struggle to learn a new culture and way of life. While they may want to
